Allusion - Biblical

"Allusions were next, right?"
"Yes, I believe so."
"Here is a great Biblical allusion for you. These ones are always the most classic."

"'No; you shall tear yourself away, none shall help you: You shall, yourself, pluck out your right eye: yourself cut off your right hand...'" (Bronte 302)

Your small knowledge of the Bible is leaving you clueless as to what this quote means. You look to her for an explanation.

"Jane is contemplating leaving Mr. Rochester after she learns of his insane wife. She is scared of what obstacles lie ahead if she chooses to leave Thornfield Hall, but she is also scared of how her own principles will be compromised if she stays. Her conscience speaks to her, pinning all the responsibility directly onto her. This quote alludes to a verse in the Bible: "If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell" (Oxford NIV Scofield study Bible, Mat 5.29-30). Jane is being told to break away from Thornfield Hall, sacrificing only small pieces of herself in the process, before she succumbs entirely to Mr. Rochester and his immoral ways."

"Oh, wow, that's deep."

  1. I really like how you set up your blog, it makes the pages much more fun and interesting to read. I really like how you set this bible verse up and your actual connection to the text was excellent. I was just wondering if you knew this verse or you have to research it?
